Good evening 2nd grade crew families,

This week in grade 2 we have been busy with a number of exciting things happening in our classroom. Some of our highlights this week, were the election at the school on Monday, talking about Spring, animals who build nests and the start of our gymnastics unit! 

Our learning intentions for Social Studies were:

  • I can name the country I live in and the province I reside in is.
  • I can talk about what a government does and how it helps people.
  • I explain what a vote is and why people vote.
  • I can describe how elections help people choose their leaders (by colours).
  • I can say what happens during an elections (people vote, someone is chose to be a leader).
  • I can explain why it's important for everyone to have a voice.

                                 


In PEW (gymnastics) our learning intentions were:

  • I can roll, jump, balance, and land safely on a mat.
  • I can hold body shapes like tuck, pike, and straddle.
  • I can move in different ways like crawling, rolling, and hopping.
  • I can make and repeat a short sequences of gymnastic moves on a mat.
  • I can control my body while balancing.
  • I can use my body to make different shapes and poses.
  • I can move with control and stop when I need to.
  • I can move safely on my mat.
  • I can listen to instructions and follow safely rules.











In Science our learning intentions were:
  • I can name animals that build nest, like birds, squirrels, or bees.
  • I can explain why animals build nests (for safety, warmth, babies).
  • I can describe what materials animals use to build their nests.
  • I can ask questions and learn more about how animals survive.
  • I can show what I learned by creating a nest during a stem challenge for my peep.
  • I can talk about how people can help protect animals' homes.

"One thing that worked well was the popsicle sticks, it was a solid structure to hold the nest up." Halle

"One thing that worked well was the base block because they were able to hold the weight of the nests and peeps." Nathan

I liked building a tricky nest with a partner, we both had different ideas, but made it work by making a DOUBLE nest."Walker

"A challenge I had was I couldn't make it as high as I planned because the table shook and it was not stable enough." William

"A challenge was EVERYTHING did not work well at first, but after my 5th try I finally got it to work." Arlo

"A challenge was the cups, stacking them all did not work because they kept falling over." Chris

"A problem was putting the peep on the top of the nest, because the nest were built really high up and it was too tall." Charlie

"It was very hard to make it balance, i needed to make sure the sides were even so they did fall over all the time." Lucy

"It was hard to put the peep on because it was not really balanced and then it always fell, but FINALLY it worked for me and I was so excited I shouted." Olive

Reminder that tomorrow is the Zoo, please make sure to pack extra snacks, water and to dress for the weather!
