Good evening 2nd grade crew families,
I hope you have all had a lovely weekend enjoying this beautiful January weather we have had. Another busy week we had together! The students have loved our Alien Inline Skating residency this week and are looking forward to our last session on Tuesday morning at 8:00 am.
Reminder that January 27th Report cards are available to view online on Powerschool and that there is a PD day on January 31st.
One of our focused highlights of learning for this week was in Literacy. Our learning intentions for UFLI are;
Foundational Literacy Skills
- I can blend sounds to read unfamiliar words.
- I can use my knowledge of letter-sound patterns to decode words when I am reading.
- I can break a word into smaller parts (syllables) to help me read it.
- I can quickly recognize and read sight words I have practiced.
- I can listen to the sounds in a word and write the letters that match them.
Reading Fluency
- I can read words and sentences smoothly, without stopping too often.
- I can change my voice to match the meaning of the text I am reading.
- I can read a story at a steady pace so that it sounds natural.
- I can reread a story to help me read it more fluently and understand it better.
Comprehension and Vocabulary
- I can use clues from the story and words I know to understand what I am reading.
- I can ask and answer questions about what I read.
- I can use new words I learn in my reading to help me understand the text.
- I can describe the main idea of a story and give details that support it.
Writing and Spelling
- I can listen to a word, say the sounds I hear, and write it down.
- I can spell words by using what I know about vowel and consonant patterns.
- I can use my phonics skills to write sentences that match my ideas.
- I can write neatly and space my letters so others can read my work easily.
