Happy Winter break 2nd grade crew families. Wishing you all a wonderful Winter holiday, and happy new year ahead for 2025!

The Winter Concert was amazing and the students did so well!!! I am very proud of them all for their efforts during the concert, huge thank you to Mrs. Harris. December has been a very busy month for our Grade 2's. Some of our highlights were the hands on scientific methods experiments our classroom Elf Jingle Bells Fluffy Mittens has brought to the students daily throughout the month of December.

Our learning intentions in Science were:

Scientific method skills.

  • I can ask questions and make predictions about science experiments the elf brings.
  • I can follow steps to conduct and experiment and record what I observe.
  • I can share what I learned from the experiment with my classmates.
  • I can record my observations by writing, drawing, or using charts.
  • I can compare my results to my prediction to see if I was correct.
Light and Sound
  • I can explain how light helps us see and create shadows (glow sticks).
  • I can explore how sound travels and how different objects make different sounds.
Weather and Seasonal Changes
  • I can describe how snow forms and how temperature affects it (elf snow).
  • I can explain why the seasons change and how it affects the environment.

Lets make a Rainbow experiment.

Will it Sink or Float?

Candy Cane experiment using cold water, room temperature water and vinegar.

Gummy Bear expanding experiment.

Cloud Dough.

Elf Volcanoes.

We also spent some time this week exploring our class's different family traditions. Our learning intentions for this were;

In ELA:
  • I can read or listen to stories about Christmas, Hanukkah and other holiday traditions.
  • I can write about my favourite holiday tradition.
  • I can ask questions to learn more about the traditions of my classmates.
In Social Studies
  • I can share about my family's holiday traditions and compare them to others.
  • I can explain why traditions are important to families and communities.
  • I can listen to and learn about holiday traditions from around the world.

Enjoy your break, see you all in January!

Ms. Craik
