Happy Sunday 2nd grade crew families,
What a fun and busy week we had in grade 2!!! Thank you again to all the families for the pumpkin donations as well to those of you who were able to attend our pumpkin investigation in class on Wednesday!
Important upcoming reminders:
November 7th is our remembrance day assembly at 10:00 am.
November 8th System Indigenous PD Day (no school for students).
November 11th Remembrance Day (no school for staff or students).
November 12th-13th Fall break.
A highlight at school this week was our pumpkin investigation. Our learning intentions in Science were:
- I can describe the properties of a pumpkin, like its size, shape, color, and texture.
- I can compare the weight and size of different pumpkins to see how they are the same and different.
- I can make predictions about whether a pumpkin will sink or float and then test it in water.
- I can explore how the inside and outside of a pumpkin feel, look, and smell different.
- I can describe how pumpkins grow from seeds and what they need to become big and healthy.
- I can explain the life cycle of a pumpkin, from seed to sprout to fruit.
- I can identify the different parts of a pumpkin, like the stem, skin, pulp, and seeds.
- I can explore how weather, like sunlight and rain, helps pumpkins grow.
- I can talk about how pumpkins need soil, water, and sunlight to grow big and healthy.
- I can ask questions about pumpkins and think of ways to explore them, like “What’s inside?” or “How many seeds are there?”
- I can make predictions about what I will find inside a pumpkin and then explore to check my guesses.
- I can count pumpkin seeds and record my findings by drawing or writing about what I learned.
- I can share what I learn about pumpkins with my classmates by talking or showing them my drawings.
"I liked that we all had different ideas and then we combined them and we were all so happy with they way it turned out!." Ayesha
"I was surprised, our pumpkin floated. I predicted it would sink. I think it floated because it put preasure on the water and the water pushed it up, but if it had been carved it would sink!." Jett
"Our pumpkin had so much stuff to get out and we were covered in yucky guts and stuff." William
"I know the pumpkin would float because no water got inside of it, because we tested it before we carved it." Ben
"I wonder how the pumpkin was floating because I noticed our pumpkin was so heavy?." Brielle
"I wonder how many actual seed there will be in our pumpkin my guess was 707, I think I was close with my guess because there was a lot of seeds." Halle
"I know the light of the candles passes through the pumpkin, especially where we carved it, but not at the back because it has thicker skin." Norah
"Light helps pumpkins grow big and strong, so that is why we plant pumpkins in May or June. I also learned that then they are ready for Fall, because it takes them that long to grow and be ready for us." Isabelle
I hope you all have had a lovely weekend with your families, see you all tomorrow!
Ms. Craik
